Most team members want to feel proud of what they do at work. They want to feel so proud that they can brag, in a healthy way, about what they do.
When asked the question “What do you do?” they want to be able to respond with excitement and pride. No matter what they do. They want someone to respond with something like this: “That’s so cool; I wish I had a job like that.”
As a leader, you want that too. When that happens, both your retention and recruiting problems are over.
And when your team members genuinely feel this way, everything changes — their energy, their performance, their willingness to go the extra mile, and, of course, their desire to stay.
But here’s the problem:
Too often, team members are too close to their daily tasks to see the bigger picture of how their work matters. They see daily, weekly, and monthly tasks as simply something to get done, to be endured. They often fail to see how those things connect to real-world impact.
As their leader, you have a unique vantage point. You can see the connections they can’t (this is true, right?).
You can help them see how much what they do matters.
