You know your people. You know their names, their roles, maybe their kids’ names. But do you actually know them?
Real relationships, the kind where people trust you, cover for you, tell you the truth even when it’s ugly, don’t happen without vulnerability. That’s true with your spouse, your best friend, and it’s true with the people who report to you. The problem is that vulnerability at work feels dangerous. What if you ask people to open up and nobody says a word? What if someone opens up too much, and now you’re in the middle of something you didn’t sign up for?
That fear is exactly why most leaders never try. And it’s exactly why the ones who do produce teams nobody else can build.
