Why I’m Almost Giddy (Yes, at 70!)
I could make a list of things wrong in the senior living industry that would be a mile long — even using 8pt type. And so could you. I’ve written about many of them and talked about them on various platforms.
But here’s the thing: I’m almost giddy with excitement (can a 70-year-old man be giddy?) about the future.
The Conversations That Changed Everything
I’m having a lot of conversations with C-suite operators about the content they consume, how they consume it, where they get that content, and what they’re focused on and thinking about. I’m talking to older leaders my age and a bit older, and also talking to leaders who have several decades still to run.
While those conversations always start with a list of standard questions about content, they inevitably drift into deep conversations about the things these leaders are spending their time and energy thinking about, learning about, and talking about.
These are things that will be transformative for future generations of elders, their families, and team members.
Fighting the Good Fight
Inevitably, these conversations include talking about the enemies of senior living greatness: status quo thinking, short-term profit thinking, and a focus on real estate, capital, and valuations rather than people and long-term success.
These leaders — some just emerging and some right in the middle of their careers — are spending a lot of time thinking about and doing something about the not-quite-good-enough status quo.
Dreaming Big Dreams
They’re dreaming big dreams for their organizations and our industry. While I have some ideas, I can’t begin to tell you exactly what senior living will look like in the next five to ten years.
But I can tell you this: it will be something amazing.
PS: This doesn’t take away from the amazing, passionate leading and dreaming of my generation. My generation and this generation set the stage for what is to come.
