I was recently contacted by Bennett Aerospace a high tech company is attempting to launch a hybrid high-tech/low-tech bedbug detection device they call Smart Hound.

It works like this: There is a high-tech cylinder that extracts air from an area that is suspected to be infested with bedbugs, the air flows through a cartridge that contains 5 “smart bugs”, that have been trained to detect the smell of bedbugs.  When their behavior indicates the presence of bedbugs, a red light shows on the device. If there are no bedbugs you get a green light. Yes, the device uses real live insects that come in a specially designed cartridge and the insects will last for a couple of weeks. Check out their video:

They are looking to generate both funding and interest in the technology through the crowd sourcing website Indiegogo. A couple of questions for you:

  • Have you had a bedbug problem?
  • How big a problem do you perceive it to be?
  • Would you use a device like this?
  • How much would you be willing to pay for a device like this?
  • Would you be interested in being a test user?
