Readership is always lower in the two weeks surrounding Christmas and New Years but some of us are still working. I thought we might mix in a little of the lighter side. Have you ever hit the “reply all” button, then frantically tried to pull it back? Or thought maybe you had when you didn’t mean to? I have heard tales of people who have lost their jobs, even their spouses, over such an “oops”. I once “replied all” to something totally inane my husband’s uncle had sent to the entire family.
Fortunately it was on the level of, “Rolling my eyes” and not, “Can you believe the crap he believes?” For me, I am more likely to make that kind of mistake in an open group conversation on Skype. Please share your experiences (confess your sin?). Maybe we can learn from you, cry for you or even laugh at or with you,

I personally have not, but someone I know and admire did. And a true disaster it was. The person ended up being fired for the content of the email. The person intended the email for only one person, but the reply all included the people the writer was attempting to evaluate (did evaluate actually, and found them seriously wanting).
Personally, I found the firing to be wrong. The writer of the email was performing a job related function and complying with regulations. Unfortunately, one of those on the reply all had more clout than did the writer of the email.

I didn’t create the moment, but I was the “victim”. A consultant I worked with didn’t agree with a change in staff decision and replied to the announcement via reply all. She made a few not-so-nice comments about her opinion of the impending disastrous fall-out (which never happened) and how she really felt about my decision.
I was so shocked I didn’t know how to respond. So, I called my boss (who also received the email) and a very embarrassed apology followed.
