This happens in every single exit interview … there’s a version of the very same sentence: “I just felt like I’d hit a ceiling here.”
And, in fairness, particularly in smaller organizations on occasion, moving on to grow is the only way to advance the team member’s career. But mostly this is not true.
Here is what is worth thinking about: Nobody ever says this at the six-month mark. They only say it on their way out the door, which means you had a year, two years, three years to hear it first, but didn’t bother to ask.
There is an easy … kind of … one-question fix.
Not a program, not a training budget, not a new HR initiative. One question, once a month, actually acted on.
