A long time ago, a really prominent senior living leader, one of the most prominent in the entire industry, reached out to invite me to dinner. He told me he was really curious about who I was and how I thought about the industry.

I was flattered and so, so nervous when the evening of the dinner came.

We got through the pleasantries and ordered our meal, and the conversation began. I asked him about a story he had told at another conference. He was off and running. He told me his entire life story. It was fun and interesting.

As he wound down his storytelling, a lightbulb went off in his head. “I forgot to ask about you and your story.” By then it was too late in the evening to have my turn, and we agreed to another meal. That was probably eight years ago, and I am pretty sure it will never happen.

I don’t think it was bait and switch, but he was so used to being the one on stage, the one talking, that it never occurred to him that he had abandoned his own agenda until it was too late to fix.
